Beltari is designed with your privacy in mind. Here is what you should know.
This policy covers the Beltari app for iPhone. beltari.app carries its own notice on any page that asks you for something.
What Data the App Accesses
- Camera — Used to aim at the night sky, and to measure how bright your sky is so the star map matches what you can actually see. Both happen on your device, in the moment: no photos or videos are captured, stored, or transmitted.
- Location — Your GPS coordinates are used on your device to work out which stars and planets are visible from where you are. Your last known position is saved on your device, so the sky can be drawn the moment you open the app instead of waiting for a fresh GPS fix — and, if you turn on Calendar reminders, so the app can tell when you have travelled far enough that a reminder it scheduled earlier would describe the wrong sky. It stays on your device: we never receive your coordinates. The one time a coordinate leaves your iPhone is when the app asks Apple which time zone you are in, so that event times are shown in your local time — that request goes to Apple, under Apple's privacy policy, and never to us.
- Motion sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer) — Used on-device to determine where your phone is pointing so the correct stars can be displayed. This data is never stored or transmitted.
What Data We Collect
Beltari collects a small amount of usage data to understand which features are used and to improve the app. Most of this is product-interaction events — for example, which screen is opened or which visual style is selected. Alongside each event, the analytics service we use attaches technical context about the device it came from: your iPhone model and screen, iOS and app version, language, region and time zone, your display and accessibility settings, the local hour and date, and how often the app has been opened.
It contains nothing that identifies you: no name, no email, no user account, no advertising identifier (IDFA), and no location. Each event does carry an identifier for your device — Apple's vendor identifier, scrambled by your iPhone before it is sent — so that repeat use can be counted as one device rather than many. It is not an advertising ID, we cannot use it to work out who you are, and it is never linked to any account. We do not use any of it to track your activity across other companies' apps or websites, and we never sell it. Beltari has no user accounts and shows no ads.
Purchases
Beltari's paid features are bought through Apple. Apple handles the payment and tells us only that a purchase was made and which tier it was — we never see your card, your billing address, or your Apple Account. There is no Beltari account, and Apple is what remembers your purchase: that is why "Restore Purchases" asks Apple rather than us. The one purchase-related thing kept on your device is a yes/no flag for long-time users — we ask Apple which version of Beltari you first downloaded, so that anyone who had the app before the paid features existed keeps them for free. We do send which tier was bought to our analytics, in the same form as everything else described above: the product, never a person.
Third-Party Services
The usage data described above is sent to TelemetryDeck, an analytics service. What they do with it once it arrives is governed by their privacy policy, not ours — we can tell you what leaves your phone, and that is what this page describes. No other third-party services, SDKs, advertising networks, or APIs are used. The app does use two of Apple's own services — the time-zone lookup described above, and the App Store for purchases — and what Apple does with those requests is covered by Apple's privacy policy. All star and planet calculations are performed entirely on your device.
Data Retention
Camera and motion data are never retained between sessions — each time you capture a star map, that orientation data exists only in memory for the duration of that viewing session. Your last known position, and the time zone worked out from it, are kept on your device as described above; each new fix overwrites the last, turning Calendar reminders off clears the copy they use, and deleting the app removes all of it. None of it is ever sent to us. Usage events are queued on your device and sent to TelemetryDeck in batches.
The Website
This policy also covers beltari.app. The website sets no cookies and asks you for nothing, with one exception: the star-chart waitlist. That form stores three things and no more: your email address, the time you sent it, and which page it came from. They are used for one thing, a single message when star charts launch. The address is stored by Cloudflare in the European Union, is never passed to a mailing-list company and never sold, is deleted once that message has gone out, and if star charts have not launched by the end of 2027 everything is deleted then. It can be removed at any time by writing to [email protected]. The same terms, stated in full, are on the page that asks for it: What happens to your email address.
Children's Privacy
Beltari has no user accounts, shows no ads, and the app never asks anyone, child or adult, for personal information. Every device is treated the same way: the usage data described above is all we collect, it contains nothing that identifies the person using the app, and we do not use it to track anyone.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
