Terms of Use

These terms cover the Beltari app for iPhone and the website at beltari.app. Using either means you accept them. If you do not, please do not use them.
Beltari is run by one person. There is no company behind it, no support desk, and no user accounts. These terms are written to say plainly what you can expect and what you cannot.
The App Licence
Beltari is downloaded from Apple's App Store, and your licence to use the app is Apple's standard licence agreement: Licensed Application End User License Agreement. That agreement governs the app itself. These terms sit alongside it and cover the website and the services described below. Where the two disagree about the app, Apple's agreement wins.
What Beltari Is For
Beltari shows you where stars, planets and constellations are, so you can find them by eye. Positions are calculated on your device from your location, the time, and your phone's sensors. Phone sensors are not instruments: a compass can be pulled off by metal or magnets, and a position can be a little wrong.
Beltari is for stargazing and learning. It is not for navigation, and it is not for any use where being wrong matters — not at sea, not in the air, not for surveying, and not for anything safety-critical. Do not rely on it for any of those.
Sky events shown in Calendar are predictions. Whether you can actually see one depends on your weather, your horizon and your light pollution, and none of that is something the app can promise.
Purchases
Beltari is free to download. Some features are paid, and every payment goes through Apple. We never see your card or your billing details, and there is no Beltari account for a purchase to be attached to: Apple remembers it, which is why "Restore Purchases" asks Apple rather than us.
Refunds are handled by Apple, under Apple's terms, not by us. We cannot issue one. Request a refund through reportaproblem.apple.com. Prices and which features are paid can change; a change never removes something you have already bought.
Star Charts
The star-chart service at beltari.app/star-charts takes a photograph you send and returns a labelled version of it. It is made by hand, one at a time, as a favour rather than a product.
- No guarantee. Not every photograph can be identified, and we may decline or fail to produce a chart for any reason, or for none. There is no deadline and no promise of a reply.
- Your photograph stays yours. Sending it gives us permission to use it for one thing only: making your chart and sending it back to you. We do not publish it, sell it, or use it for anything else.
- Send only your own photographs, and only ones that are yours to send.
- What happens to your photograph and your email address is set out on the page that asks for them, and in the privacy policy.
Using the Website
You may read beltari.app, link to it, and quote it with attribution. Please do not try to break it, overload it, or use it to send anything abusive, unlawful, or that is not yours to send.
Who Owns What
The Beltari app, this website, the name and the artwork are ours. Photographs you send stay yours. Star charts we make from your photograph are yours to keep and use however you like.
Star and planet positions come from published astronomical catalogues and are nobody's property.
No Warranty
Beltari is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be accurate, available, uninterrupted, or free of faults, and we do not promise it will keep working on future devices or future versions of iOS.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of Beltari or beltari.app. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Ending It
You can stop using Beltari at any time by deleting the app. We may stop offering the app, the website, or the star-chart service at any time. Anything you have already bought through Apple remains subject to Apple's terms.
Changes to These Terms
If these terms change, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
